Known as reverse engineering, deformulation is the separation, identification and quantitation of ingredients in a formulation. Our experienced chemists can perform deformulations on final products.

Deformulation analysis uses instrumental techniques and conventional extraction methods to identify and semi-quantify the components of a complex mixture. The components may include pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, chemical or biological markers from natural products, stabilizers, antioxidants, preservatives and correctives, etc. Although we do not guarantee a "cookbook recipe", our analysis, in most instances, identifies the chemical class of major and minor components. Using our client's information along with our scientific expertise we can create a working "recipe" that meets a variety of needs, including:

  • Competitive product characterization
  • Identification of batch to batch variations
  • Comparative analysis of "good" and "bad" samples
  • Patent infringement or trade secret investigations

Our experienced chemists are kept up-to-date with the latest methods and have developed techniques for unraveling complicated formulations.
